I teach first grade in New York. I work in a great school where the children know they are cared about and a good education is highly valued. I may be biased, but I always have a terrific class!

My students work hard all day long. The day is chock full of structured lessons. The lessons are fun and engaging (I hope!), but it is very important to set aside time during the week for the children to play. They get to make choices about what to do and socialize with one another. Also, they continue to learn as they play, since the games and activities are educational and foster creativity. I have been teaching for several years, so now the games, puzzles, craft supplies, and books are in poor condition. I would like to replenish the supplies to create stimulating, engaging, learning centers.

The children love to read "big books," so I am asking for oversized books and a rack to store them in. For the art center, I would love some googly eyes and Wiki Stix (bendable wax sticks) for the kids to create projects with. Games and puzzles are a huge hit, so I am requesting board games and floor puzzles. I would also like some storytelling puppets, which encourage both literacy skills and oral expression.

Your gift will provide low income students, who have few toys at home, with an opportunity to play and simply be kids. Through play, the children grow and develop in so many ways, and they have fun doing it! Your generosity will provide my students with a wealth of materials with which they can express themselves. These wonderful children deserve the best!
