Please Help Make My Read Alouds Interactive! 2

My students need 33 quality children's books, including "Jumanji" and "Peter Rabbit".

"Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read." — Marilyn Jager Adams Hello! I teach second grade at an urban charter school in Chicago. My school is located in a high-need, inner city area. My students have chosen to attend my school because we are focused on academic achievement. Our staff is young, energetic and focused 100% on our students. My students are excited and ready to learn, but many are missing critical reading skills and are performing well below grade level. Some are ready to read for comprehension, but others are still learning to sound out basic words and sentences. The most effective way to reach this diverse group of learners is through Interactive Read Alouds. The teacher reads quality literature to students, pausing throughout to ask questions that involve critical thinking, have students act out elements of the story and extend the learning afterward through reader's theater and projects. My school's budget is extremely limited, but they were able to purchase each teacher a manual that outlines how to develop interactive read alouds for each comprehension skill: inferencing, main idea, drawing conclusions, making connections, etc. However, they did not have enough money to purchase the actual literature to be read aloud to the students. Without these books, it is not possible to implement the Interactive Reading program. The quality children's read alouds included in this grant aligns with the Interactive Reading program. With your help, I can begin this program and develop the comprehension and critical thinking skills of all learners, regardless of their word-reading level. It is our classroom's "Big Goal" that all students will make two years of growth this year in reading. Will you help us reach that goal and bring us closer to being learners prepared for college and beyond?
