Experience 'Night' By Day

My students need 30 copies (a class set) of the book "Night".

As a result of reading this book, my students will understand exactly what a Holocaust experience was like, thus making them appreciate the reasoning behind Anne Frank and her family going into hiding. This non-fiction, historical book brings a real, horrific event full frontal and helps them understand the results that can come from hate. I teach Language Arts, 8th grade, and teach in a school and community in which reading is of vital importance in preparation for high school. I teach in a school with a very high non-English speaking population and reading helps to improve their skills including reading and understanding English.

My students face financial obstacles that prevent them from obtaining "extra" supplies other than pencil and paper that can enhance their education. The current economic situation has not helped. My students really respond to material that is factual because it has more credibility. By incorporating history to enhance understanding, they can't get enough!

By having a class set of this novel, each student is able to follow along using their own classroom copy and successfully participate in classroom discussion and their own independent assignments.

One of the things I teach my students are about how powerful words can be (hence the quote on my profile pic). Whether it is written or spoken, language has a huge impact on all of us and by reading the words of Elie Wiesel they can see that first hand. The events of 'Night' and the Holocaust were first created by words to hurt those who were "different". Elie Wiesel's uses his words to make us all understand why hateful words should never be spoken.
