Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work at a special education school, servicing emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance. These factors come together and place our children at a huge disadvantage, but we are committed to providing these students with a rigorous academic and therapeutic program. The school’s ethnicity is as follows: 60% Hispanic, 30% African American, 8% Caucasian, and 2% Asian. I teach English and Social Studies to these special needs students. We recently received a new computer for our classroom, but it does not have the basic Microsoft Office software package, which used to come standard with any desktop or laptop computer. My students need this software to complete essays, prepare presentations, and compiling research. Many of my students plan to pursue higher education opportunities, through college and vocational training programs. It is imperative that they feel comfortable with utilizing the basic software programs in this package: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, and Microsoft Outlook. We are also in need of blank CD-RW discs, which my students utilize for saving their assignments. I would like to have one CD-RW for each student, so they can also work on projects from home. Thank you so much for considering my wonderful special needs students!
