Reading, Writing, And Rising Up

My students need 5 copies each of 8 novels, including "The Secret Life of Bees" and "The Great Gatsby", along with 20 copies each of 2 titles; "Fences", by August Wilson and "Night", by Elie Wiesel.

We are not a "second chance" school, rather, we are a "second draft" school. Second chance means that there was a failure along the way somewhere, and there wasn't, just learning and revision, like in the second draft of a paper. My students are 9th and 10th graders who are diverse in just about every possible way, but are united by a common goal: to graduate and earn their diploma. We are an alternative education facility sering 250 of the hardest working kids I've ever met -many of which have overcome nearly impossible circumstances to be here.

Great students, eager minds, no books. We have only one classroom set of books and no literature circle choices. I have been accumulating books from sales, etc., but the culturally relevant books that they should be reading are not commonly found in used book sales.

We need two class sets of books: a novel, "Night", which will increase student awareness of the Holocaust, human suffering, and healing, and then a play, "Fences", which deals with the pressures of growing up black during the mid 1900's. In addition to the class sets, we need literature circle books that suit both boys and girls. In literature circles, students will have the opportunity to work with their peers to deeply explore books that they choose and they will learn how to be members of a team and work respectfully with others. They will also learn how to actively improve their learning, and they will be able to work in a more personal setting on their reading comprehension skills.

Your donation will make a profound difference in the lives of students who have known little other than adversity. These students face the harsh reality of a severe lack of resources at every turn, they deserve better in their classrooms. These students are here because they want to revise their "first draft" lives, but without engaging and relevant instructional materials students may lose their motivation to succeed and their interest in school, which could stop them from achieving their ultimate goal of graduation.
