I teach fourth grade gifted and talented students in Alabama from fourteen different inner city schools. These students are bussed to my school one day a week for enrichment. The unit we are studying is about Asian cultures and their art. Our culminating activity for the unit includes students creating their own Asian inspired art.

Teachers use state allotted money for their students each year in Alabama. For the 2009-2010 school year, however, pupil-supply money has been eliminated. So, I will get $0.00 to support and enrich my students.

The resources needed for this request are consumable art supplies (with the exception of the tables). This Asian culture unit (which includes producing art) will allow my students to experience a different ethnic background from their own. To know yourself more fully, you must experience other cultures, make comparisons and figure out how you are going to contribute to our human history. The art product created by them will be taken home and displayed, allowing them to talk with family members about their experiences while studying Asian cultures. (Hopefully, these conversations will inspire them to talk about their cultures and art as well.)

Your support will make it possible for my students to be enriched by their participating in a concept-based unit of study of Asian cultures which includes their producing Asian inspired art. Concepts used for this unit are: Community, Conflict, Change, Tradition, and Expression. These concepts require higher-order thinking skills, self-reflection, and evaluation of the importance of Asian cultures from the past, present, and future.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
