Debate Supplies!

My students need storage bins to carry their evidence for debate tournaments. We have many students on the debate team and not enough storage bins for each debate team.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For 100 years debate has been dominated by private schools or wealthy, elite public schools. The Urban Debate League was created to provide the opportunity for public school students to compete. While it has created infinite opportunities, the resource inequalities still exist. My students cannot wear the fancy suits that their competitors wear. We cannot travel in private chartered buses to tournaments. We cannot attend tournaments that charge a lot of money. And our school cannot afford supplies for the Debate Team. We do what we can to fundraise, but the bulk of the money to the support the debate team comes from my own pocket and whatever students can contribute. But as our team grows larger and stronger, the need for more supplies, tournaments, travel, and coaching grow. I’ve been told that we should limit the number of students on the debate team but for me that is out of the question. Every student who is interested and excited about learning should never be denied that opportunity. Also, I firmly believe that a civics education grounded in debate, public speaking, oratory, politics, current events, law, government, and discussion is desperately needed in today’s schools. Let alone its importance for college. The skills and knowledge our students learn in debate are all college prep which is why the majority of colleges also feature debate teams. Part of my passion for debate comes from my own debate coach. I enrolled in a public speaking class in high school because I was one of the shyest students in the school. The teacher made me join the debate team and I was hooked. I learned so much, met so many great people, and it helped me to get into college. Our teacher spared no expense to guarantee us the best opportunities. I want the same for my own students. Which is why I apply for this grant. DonorsChoose is the resource that keeps our program alive. We are hoping to order debate tubs for our students to store their evidence, transport their evidence and use their evidence. The type of debate our students compete in is called Policy Debate. In Policy Debate the topic is a year long topic which requires the students to research and accumulate enormous amounts of files, evidence, and speeches during the course of a year. They require tubs and carts to move their evidence to tournaments, buses, classrooms, home, etc. And the tubs double as podiums during debate rounds because students put the tubs on desks to use as artificial podiums to deliver their speeches. Because our program continues to grow, we need more tubs for our new class of students. Thanks!
