Our school is a Title I school. Recently, the school operated on a modified calendar and serves approximately 425 students in Kindergarten through Fifth grade. In the school year 2007-2008, our literacy program was named as a Literacy Spot school by the Reading Recovery Council and the South Carolina State Department of Education. In addition, the school received funding for AVID to be implemented in 4th and 5th grade for students who qualify and will be first generational college bound students. Two additional grants have been funded to provide students with fresh grown fruits and vegetables with connections to curriculum concepts across grade levels. In 2008-2009, the school was chosen as one of two elementary schools to become the state’s first Inside-Out Centers for Learning. The selected sites will develop and pilot initiatives designed to transform teaching and learning for the future.

During the 2008-2009 school year, I selected a group of students to participate in a newly formed group, "The Trash Can Band." Students were eligible to participate in grades 3 and 4. Thirty-five students were chosen based on their ability to read and perform simple rhythmic patterns. I also targeted students who were on or below grade level. Although differentiated instruction was required, the students were able to perform beyond my highest expectations. In February of 2009, the students were chosen to participate in the WHS Perc-Up performance. The event was successful with almost 500 relatives, friends, and community members attending. The "Trash Can Band" used random sounds of everyday life; for example, broomsticks, pots and pans, garbage cans, and even kitchen utensils to make music. The group worked together using simple building blocks to create something complex, and something everyone could identify with. The group of students had very strong personalities, and worked together building teamwork skills, while increasing their self esteem.

I cannot help but wonder how the "Trash Can Band" would feel if they had authentic percussion instruments to play, which is why I am requesting 16 different percussion instruments and sets. This group has become one of the school's most exclusive performing ensembles. The students have developed the ability to understand new concepts, think logically, solve problems, exercise self-discipline, and perform with confidence in a group. It is my sincere hope that these students will continue to appreciate music and have a lifetime of success in their educational endeavors and vocational pursuits.

These students are exposed to a variety of activities that will help to strengthen not only their musical ability, but will also assist them in other curricular areas as well. Studies have shown that music aides in the development of mathematical and linguistic skills, as well as self motivation and self esteem. Our success is dependent largely on your support and contribution. Music is a part of the fabric of our society. Every human culture uses music to carry forward its ideas and ideals. Music helps our kids and communities in substantial ways. The arts create jobs, increase tourism, and spur growth in hotels, restaurants, and local businesses in our cities and towns. This valuable experience has helped to broaden my student's understanding and appreciation of music and the world around them. Please fund my project so that the students can continue to enjoy music.
