A Picture Writes A Thousand Words

My students need art and craft supplies such as watercolor paints, construction paper, oil pastels, glue, yarn and pipe cleaners to create visual works that will inspire effective writing (and vice versa).

As a second grade teacher at a public elementary school in Nevada one of my greatest challenges is bringing writing to life in my classroom.

Sure my kids know their ABC’s, can spell, write complete sentences (most of the time) and read, but writing – real writing: telling a story with a beginning, middle and end; using adverbs and adjectives to bring their story to life; creating characters and plots – is much more than simply putting words together.

To help with the writing process I want my students to be able to create visual pieces to go with their stories. These arts and crafts will help them with story development and vice versa. To paint one thousand words, however, requires a lot of materials: yarn, water color paints, markers, tissue paper, oil pastels, glue and paper.
