I teach kindergarten in an older neighborhood school. Many of our parents choose the neighborhood because our school is the one they once attended. Our school has maintained a very good reputation for years. However, our district faces financial problems. Teachers will be furloughed without pay for two days to help the situation. Many new teachers will loose their job for the upcoming year. Our classroom is undersized for twenty three kindergarten children. Our school is very old, but it is home for us. Our teachers have created a colorful environment within our walls and all maintain a positive attitude. Our children are our priority.
What is Criss-cross applesauce, spoons in the bowl? That’s the way kindergarten students sit in large group! Our legs are crossed and our hands (spoons) are in our laps (the bowl). We begin every morning and end every afternoon in a large group setting. Students join together for the morning welcome meeting and large group instruction. Large Group is also a time for singing together, doing calendar activities, watching a PowerPoint, have discussions, and listening to stories. All group instruction is done with the entire class sitting together. The students have a better view and the teacher has a full view of each child. Most importantly Large Group provides “our family” with a place to join together.
Each child deserves a bright sunny classroom and a space to sit together. A cold tiled floor does not make a warm and cozy environment. We really need to warm-up our classroom and give students a comfortable spot to sit in. The Sunny Day Rug will turn our classroom into a cozy space for us to meet together and is the answers to our prayers. Everyone will have their own special spot which will belong to them all year.
