Making Movies, Changing Lives

My classroom is a picture of true America. My students bring diversity of all sorts (gender, race, socio-economic status, language) to create a challenging but strong community. I teach 7th Grade Core, which means I get to spend half of my day with the same 30 students (a gift, trust me) teaching them writing, literature, social studies, and basically how to be better human beings. We are a high poverty and high pride school.

I just took a class on Media Literacy. The class filled me with amazing ideas of how to use the things students are already literate in (movies, television, Internet, video games) and help them to apply those EXACT SAME literacy skills to reading and writing. It sounds so simple yet requires a little bit of help. Part of what I want to do with my class is to have them read and write movies just like they would read and write newspapers and novels. Of course without camcorders we can't film and edit our work.

You can help by providing my class with one camcorder. I've already figured out how to rotate the lesson plans/groups so that students are not sitting around waiting for their turn. With this one camcorder (a really high-quality, durable, and inexpensive one at that) we can soon be on the road to applying our natural and passive movie viewing skills into active and creative literacy skills.

This project is larger than it may seem. Media is how this generation communicates; I want my classroom to embrace that. Your commitment and donation to this project will help make school more relevant. Using Media Literacy is speaking their common language and in turn strengthening their other language (reading & writing). This project isn't designed to create the next Steven Spielberg (it might) it's designed to create the next William Shakespeare. This project is not just about making movies, it's about changing lives.
