Our Readers Workshop Needs Some Work!

My amazing students need 37 wonderful new additions to our classroom library. These books will help my students focus on reading comprehension skills.

I am a first year; first grade teacher in a high needs Title I school. Our school building rests in the middle of the Nations Capitol and the housing project where most of my students reside. These contrasting views are striking, and inspire me everyday to be the “best” teacher for my amazing students.

Teaching my kids to love reading has been goal since the first day of school. I know that a strong reading base will ensure success for my students. They face so many challenges and I want to give them every opportunity to achieve greatness. I have worked, all year to provide my students opportunities to engage with books. I know that for many of my students the only exposure they get to books takes place in our classroom. We started the year with basic books that drilled simple words. However we have long since graduated from those texts! My amazing readers are now in need of a fresh batch of books that will allow them to “dig deeper” into the texts and develop essential critical reading skills.

I have requested a new series of "readers workshop" books. This lot includes over two dozen award winning books. The texts and storylines will allow them to refine essential skills such as developing schema, asking questions, and synthesizing information. And, the new additions will keep them interested in reading! We are nearly done with our school year and I want to make sure that we finish strong!

I am asking you to support this project, because in doing so you will be ensuring that every child is given the chance to achieve greatness. My students are amazing. They have so many obstacles that could hinder their enthusiasm and hope, and yet they remain determined. I made a promise to them at the start of the year that I would be their greatest advocate. However, I cannot do it alone! The powerful combination of dedicated teaching and superior resources are what my students need to reach their full potential!
