Help my students believe in Excellence!! I teach English I and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) to 9th and 10th grade students. I teach in a high-need, low performing community.

Everyday my students deal with negative stereotypes of minorities. Often they have low self-esteem and do not believe that academic success is cool. Many of my students feel that getting good grades is "selling out." They lack pride and motivation, and it takes a lot of work to encourage them.

The resources I need are different types of candy, sweet treats, to build an academic focused classroom community. One of the things I do to motivate my students to achieve is recognizing them when they make an "A" on a major assignment or when they perform well in group activities. I created "The A-List" in my classroom. We have a chart board with all of the students' names. Every time a student earns an "A," he/she is recognized, receives a star to put on the chart, and receives candy. At the end of each quarter, the person with the most "A's" wins a cup full of candy. The students love the recognition and they love the candy; however, I need help funding this endeavor. My school, like all others, does not have money to support this effort.
