Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach full day kindergarten with 29 students currently enrolled in my class. Our school is in a high-need area and is considered at-risk. More than 85% of our families are below the poverty line so the entire school receives free breakfast and lunch. We also have a weekend food program for families.

I document our science activities, investigations, and observations with a digital camera. We have been investigating animals and my digital camera is just not able to get clear close-up pictures of small guppies, goldfish, worms, or isopods (roly polies and sow bugs). We use these photos to do large group observations and I write the children's' comments on posters with the pictures. I also print the photos and the children write their observations after they glue them in their science notebooks. This really helps with students' reading and writing sight words and words they can sound out phonetically.

I read about a child friendly digital microscope in one of my science textbooks for a master's level course I am taking. This microscope has the capability to take digital photos and make a slide show with them or save them to print at magnifications of 10x, 60x, and 100x. The microscope can be removed off it's base in order to take photos of objects. This is essential as we would use it take photos of live animals and also to document the properties of water when interacting with a variety of materials (fabric, paper, wood, leaves).

You will make it possible for my students to continue their growth as successful readers and writers by increasing the resources they can use to develop those skills. They enjoy writing and reading about things that interest them and that's what we could record with this tool.
