Character Education Through Literature

My students need 35 copies of the novel "Crash", by Jerry Spinelli.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help us learn about bullies while we boost our literacy skills! My students are sixth graders in a high poverty school. Many of my students are English Language Learners, which makes exposure to literature and language crucial to their learning. We are an urban neighborhood school and many of my students are exposed to various kinds of bullying in and outside of school.

As sixth graders, my students are entering middle school for the first time. I see many of them that are the victims of bullying from both in and outside of the school. Many students are not aware of how to deal with these behaviors. This results in everything from poor grades to fights for students who don't have an outlet for their feelings. Students are often afraid to truly engage in a conversation about bullying in class. It is a risky topic to talk about for the students, as no one wants to be seen as telling on someone. We need a way to bring these conversations to the forefront in a low-risk way for students. In addition, my students are in need of exposure to quality literature. Many of them are English Language Learners and need to see the language at work. The best way to get students involved in language and reading is to get them involved in a quality, engaging novel on a topic of interest to them.

My students will benefit from a classroom set of the novel Crash by Jerry Spinelli in a number of ways. First, this is a quality novel. There are many opportunities for language discussion and comprehension activities. The book is about a typical middle school bully who meets a nerdy boy who he endlessly picks on. The nerdy boy in the end teaches the bully that they aren't really that different at all. The great thing about this novel is that it is from the perspective of the bully. You start by identifying with the bully. You giggle at his pranks until one day he takes it too far. Students get a chance to empathize with the picked on character, and in the end, the students see that it is possible to change your behaviors. I feel that this topic will allow my students to engage in real, but low-risk conversation and thinking about bullying as we read this novel. This will give us a start for a conversation I hope to keep coming back to even after the book is finished.

With your help, we can change students' thinking about bullies. These conversations can help to open a dialogue in my classroom with students who are just entering middle school, a time when they are most at risk for being the victim of a bully or becoming a bully themselves. Providing my students with the opportunity to talk about bullying while reading high quality literature will help my students boost their literacy skills while providing them with a forum to express feelings in a positive and appropriate way.
