Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been teaching kindergarten at this school for three years, and integrating art into the language arts has been most challenging for me. I have the students cut and paste, color with crayons and water paint, but using paint to make large pictures has been difficult. My students are 100 percent English language learners, and 95 percent of them receive free lunch. We are a charter school in our second year and have made great progresses except in art appreciation. This art center would give the students a great opportunity to express themselves artistically.

Recently, I showed my students a collection of Eric Carle books. They were amazed at his illustrations throughout all of his work. We have no area nor supplies to paint at our school since our focus is on language arts, math and technology. Therefore this center would be awesome for our students to take part in.

Our class needs an art station with easels, paint, brushes, and paint holders. We will use this as an extension while discussing touchstone texts throughout the year. Students will be able to illustrate characters, settings, themes, problems, and solutions in narrative texts. They will also have the opportunity to express themselves in a different learning style which can be used for authentic assessment when unable to speak or write in the English Language. Our class would benefit tremendously.

Your help will make my students realize how important art has been in history and currently. They can see similarities between themselves and others through art.
