"I am a fifth year teacher in the largest urban school district in Illinois. I believe I have one of the best jobs in the system: teaching the youngest students to have a solid foundation and lifelong love of learning. My classroom serves children who are aged three - five with disabilities and then gives priority to those "at risk" for future learning problems. Many of my students come to my classroom with what many people would consider strikes against their learning at such a young age. As the Early Childhood Special Education teacher I mainly serve children with Developmental disabilities, Autism, and Learning disabilities. The children with identified disabilities learn right beside their typically developing peers in a blended classroom. I work with a collaborative team in order to meet the needs of all students in the classroom. It is my goal to present colors, letters, numbers, shapes, and other basic learning principles through a variety of situations so that every child's strength is highlighted. At my old school, I had a grant funded through Donorschoose.org to bring TouchMath to my classroom. TouchMath is a program that provides children with a visual and tactile (hands on) approach to learning math skills. Many of my children who are able to learn to count by rote and count manipulatives have an impossible time grasping the concept that 3 says "three". TouchMath associates the numbers with a special "dot pattern" that will enable the students to link the number three with the visual concept of three dots. Eventually many students will visualize the dots without them appearing right in front of them. A generous donor was able to fund a project to provide me with part of the TouchMath program. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival. The materials I am now asking for will further the mathematical development of my preschoolers. I am now requesting the “3-D Numerals” and the “Touch Point Mini-Poster Set.” Both of these materials will allow my students to have more hands on math activities in the classroom that will reinforce the symbols that are related to math. DonorsChoose.org has helped me create miracles in my classroom. I am asking you to help me create a math miracle in my students. Please help us have more math that we can feel!
