After the first couple of shipments, they were eager to see what new puzzles would be joining our repertoire. We have been able to use our puzzles during small group work - allowing students to problem solve in their small groups. Once each group has had a turn with the puzzle, we then keep it available for use during our free choice time. \r\n\r\nOur students have been voting for which puzzles they want to use first. We record their votes on the board - then discuss which puzzle had the most/least votes and how we know. We can't wait to use some of our puzzles for our next IB units! We can use our seasons puzzles for each season and our bugs puzzle when we learn about living things. \r\n\r\nWe know that we are going to be able to use the puzzles all year long! They were so excited when they watched us take all of the plants out of their boxes. It was fun to make predictions about the types of plants we may get next! We were able to discuss the similarities and differences across the plants. \r\n\r\nThe students helped us pot our plants. They loved having a chance to get a little dirty in the potting soil. We talked about which pots would work best for each plant. As a class we decided on the best places in our classroom to put each plant. We've continued taking care of our plants. The children really enjoy creating and using their imagination while they're building their fine-motor skills. The children each got to pick their own colors and have their own Play-Doh to use during our center times. \r\nThey learned about hand hygiene and washing their hands before and after they touch the Play-Doh in order to keep it usable for as long as possible. \r\nWhile they are making items, they are building motor skills by using Play-Doh scissors. They also are using accessories such as cookie cutters and rollers to create creations. The children were able to decide if they mixed their colors or kept them separate. We have enough materials that we can switch them out all year long! Our current favorites are the sensory tubes and the mammal specimen exploration center. Our students were eager to use the magnifying glass to take a close look at the specimens in the set. Our sensory tubes have opened up conversations about the properties of matter. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your kindness and support for our classroom! They immediately walked over to the rug to feel how soft it was! Some friends started singing the alphabet while walking around the border with letters, and others were recognizing letters on the lily pads and turtles. They were especially excited for our very first morning meeting on the rug!\r\n\r\nFor our first morning meeting our students were given their own personal number to sit on - either on a lily pad or a turtle. Each child was eager to learn where their special spot was going to be. Now our students know that this space belongs to them - it helps us maintain distance and personal space during our large group activities. Children have even been using the rug during self-selected time. The Lakeshore Magnetic Designer was also taken out right away for students to work on their fine-motor skills while making art. \r\nWe have used the Stand-Up Magnetic Design center for the Turn & Learn magnet gears that we received as part of this donation. We also used this center for a 10 frame math game. A few weeks ago, we used it for a \"fire rescue\" game. Currently, we are exploring the \"Engineer-A-Coaster\" activity. This week the children have been drawing plans and then trying out their plans on the Magnetic Design center. \r\nBefore the end of the year, we will use the Create-A-Path Magnetic center. We have cleaner to last us awhile to continue to keep our rug clean.
