My 1st grade students need 18 math resources, including 2 sets of Magna-Tiles, a Money Hands-On Teaching Kit, Addition and Subtraction Take-Home Rings and a Math Stories Paperback Library.
I teach a 1st grade general education class in a low socio-economic, high-need community with very enthusiastic students.
My students are very literal in their learning and need 'hooks' to be able to hang new learning on. They need to feel like their learning is very interactive as well as hands-on to be able to hang on to it. I have found that when they are using manipulatives to learn, they fully learn the concept much quicker; paper and pencil at their desks has not proved to be the most effective.
The resources that I have requested are meant to be used in a hands-on manner. The students will be able to use these manipulatives to work on the concepts that they need the most work on. After learning about a concept, students will be able to practice it using practical means. For example, teaching money can be a difficult concept for many 1st graders. After I teach the students about the coins, what they look like, their value, and how to count them, they can take out their set of coins, and we can practice counting together, while the students get to see and feel a great replica.
This project is vital to the needs of my students. With your help, these fantastic 1st graders will be able to build strong math skills for a lifetime of success in math and all areas of their lives!
