I teach third grade at a public school in California. Our school is located on top of a hill in a beautiful affluent neighborhood, but overlooks the utter poverty of the projects where a large proportion of our student population lives. Needless to say, these are low income families, and as a result, have to deal with many stressful situations in their lives every day, including bad nutrition. After a recent health scare, I came back to school a new man. Before I ate whatever I wanted and rarely exercised, but after newly being diagnosed with heart problems, that has all changed. Now it’s all about healthy food and exercise. My students are very supportive and now request snacks such as cherry tomatoes, sugar snap peas and cucumber slices instead of the cookies, cake and chips they used to bring in to share. They are really trying to keep me on the right track. The other day I tried an experiment. I brought in a gallons of fresh squeezed orange and carrot juice and shots of wheatgrass for each student. It was gone in five minutes. They wanted more, but at close to fifty dollars for the lot, seconds wasn’t even an option. Then I had an idea… I have an old hand orange juicer in my class, so when school was over, I went to the Latin American neighborhood where citrus fruit is cheap and plentiful. Well, the next morning I started juicing at 6:30 and forty-five minutes later I had just squeezed enough juice to fill three cups – with close to twenty students in my class I had a long way to go before everyone’s thirst would be quenched. The district health curriculum aligns with healthy eating and I have already planned several activities around fresh juices and other highly nourishing foods. Since this is something we would seriously like to continue, I decided to seek other alternatives. I found an economical, but sturdy citrus juicer, and an even better fruit and vegetable juice fountain to add to our classroom kitchen. With three citrus juicers and two juice fountains, I should be able to provide a variety of juices for all of my students in a timely manner. It is my most sincere wish that you help fund this proposal. Teaching these kids about healthy eating (and drinking) will help to ensure better nutrition and fitness later on in life. Who knows? We might even inspire one of them to become a nutritionist. If nothing else, we could help them avoid the problems that I now have to deal with for the rest of my life.
