Getting my fourth grade students to want to read is one of the biggest challenges I face as a teacher. Many of my students come from low income homes where reading is just not a priority.

One of my most important missions is to foster a love of reading in my students. As a teacher, I would like to provide my students with opportunities to read from a variety of genres, so that they can find books they love.

One way I can do this is to move away from the reading textbook and read chapter books with my students. This will enable me to guide their reading and help them to see how much fun reading a good book can be. Reading a chapter book together is much less intimidating to a student who is afraid to move into books with no pictures. In addition, we can learn a variety of skills with each chapter book.

I have chosen two classic books to start my class down the road to reading enjoyment. My students need 30 copies each of two chapter books, "Shiloh" and "The Cricket in Times Square." In addition, I need the teacher's guide to go along with these two beloved chapter books. With your support, my students will learn how books can take them to new worlds.
