Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 7th grade Reading/Language Arts teacher at a Middle School in Greater New Orleans. Ninety percent of the students come from households that fall at or below the poverty level. Consequently, resources of any kind are hard to come by-even books.

Books are the most important tool for any teacher and I have found that my students learn the most effectively when each one of them has a copy they can call their own. This allows them to continue the educational process outside of school when they are able to take the novel home. When a student has his or her own copy, it promotes intrinsic investment in learning from the book. When I came there were no classroom sets of novels provided for my 7th grade students. They were expected to learn out of outdated textbooks which could not pique their interest in reading. As a result, I enlisted the help of other teachers who loaned me class sets of novels, and also received additional sets of novels from my mother's school in New Jersey. However, as I move into the end of the year of teaching I am even more aware of the needs of my students and the need to look for other avenues of donation.

Therefore, my request for 35 copies of "Chasing Vermeer" would be useful to create an interdisciplinary unit on the mystery and art.

Personal copies of "Chasing Vermeer" would engage, excite, and encourage student learning. This wonderful book would expose students to not only the mystery format, but would also provide an introduction to Fine Art.
