This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Film Acting and Film Studies at a Career Education High School. Much of our school’s mission is grounded in the belief that the arts are an important part of a student’s educational foundation. So while our school’s career academies will provide job-specific skills for our graduates, we believe training in the arts is necessary to produce graduates who will succeed in the marketplace. The student population is very diverse: 63% Hispanic, 16% Caucasian, 11% Asian/ Pacific Islander, 9% African American and 1% American Indian/Alaskan Native. 25% of the school population participates in the free and reduced lunch program.

On Tuesday, a student asked me whether I thought his mother was right to take away a knife from him. He told me he would never bring it to school, but he had to have it because the convenience store in his neighborhood was robbed weekly. On Wednesday, a student asked for a ride home because her parents were at the airport. Driving home, she told me her mother was moving to the Philippines to go to school for the next 4 years, because she couldn’t get a job in the US. She said she didn’t know when she would see her mother again. How can I as a teacher help these students and teach my film curriculum?

Film is at the center of our culture. Teachers know that students respond to film; their students are, for the most part, filmgoers, and talk about the latest releases and what genres they like best (i.e. science fiction, romance, drama, etc.). My project will answer the question: Why is the journey more important than getting there? I hope it can help these students express and release those feelings of hopelessness and see the future. Using project-based learning, we explore poetry and personal experiences to create a short film expressing each student’s personal journey. In order to be successful in this project, we need 2 digital cameras so that multiple groups can shoot their films! We like to get 2 Canon ZR930 cameras.
