Tools for Science Lab

My students need a set of 24 timers, 6 ice cream makers and a Modeling Convection Currents set.

Science is Cool! I teach 6th grade science. I teach in a middle school that has many bilingual students. English may not be spoken at home.

Students learn from hands on experiences in the science lab. Reading from a text book can be very challenging for students with reading disabilities or language barriers. Hands on helps them put the vocabulary with the action.

Student timers are needed in physical science labs. Students are required to calculate average speed, velocity and average acceleration. These activities need to be timed. Using the ice cream maker ball students are also able to classify substances according to their physical properties. Students would see physical changes such as change of state, density, temperature when making ice cream. Students would also measure the change in temperature when salt is added to ice causing another change in matter. Students can use unique convection materials to investigate convection currents in water and develop an operational understanding of the relationship between water temperature and its movement. This knowledge can then be applied to geology as students analyze data about the earth’s layers and convection currents in the lithosphere. The information gathered from these experiments is then combined to explain the motion of the earth’s tectonic plates.
