Through these new texts, students will practice making inferences, identifying theme and main idea, building vocabulary, analyzing characters, making connections, asking questions, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text. Most importantly, they will learn that reading can be an enjoyable experience rather than simply another assignment.\r\nIn my classroom, reading looks like students choosing books that interest them, reading independently, sharing what they are discovering, and talking with classmates about characters, problems, and ideas. Because my students spend much of their school day working with technology, I want to give them meaningful opportunities to step away from a screen and become immersed in a story.\r\nI especially hope to reach students who do not yet see themselves as \"readers.\" A high-interest book can be the spark that changes that. When students find a character, topic, or story that captures their attention, they become more willing to read, discuss, ask questions, and keep going. I am able to offer a wider variety of books to my students to read during independent reading time. My male students especially are enjoying the sport themed graphic novels. They like that they can pick one up and finish it quickly. I also have students that are hooked on the Marie Lu books and are constantly asking for more. \r\n\r\nSince offering a wider variety of books in my classroom, I have seen students scores improve particularly in vocabulary. I am also able to have a lot of conversations with my students about what they are reading, what they want to read next, and what books I recommend to them.
