I teach advanced 6th grade students at a diverse Title One school in a rural community. My class is a project based classroom, and I am so fortunate to teach such bright and inspiring students. The novel tells the story of a young boy with trauma in his childhood who finds community and purpose by joining a track team. I really think that this novel will engage even my most reluctant readers. I have many students who love any book about sports and also many students who have had traumatic childhoods. \r\n\r\nAfter we read the novel as a class, we will be working on a project where students will determine the theme of the book and then adapt that theme to a new story. They were used to make my literacy circles something kids would enjoy. \r\nI have always been of the mindset that while children need to learn the concepts, they need to learn how to apply these skills in real life too. I also want to make sure kids find enjoyment in reading, so I always want to make sure they have options which seem enjoyable to them. \r\nWe always start our literacy circles with a \"book tasting,\" complete with transforming the room into \"Starbooks Cafe,\" where the kids can get hot chocolate while they spend the class sampling different books to decide what catches their attention the most. Once we have the groups established, they work within their group, with everyone having an assigned job for the group discussions. At the conclusion of the literacy circles, I always like to allow the kids a chance to express what they read into a one-pager, only we do it in a parking spot with chalk. They have to design the entire parking spot to be representative of what they read, including quotes and pictures which fit with the book. \r\nI'm telling you about the entire process because I want you to know your generosity is something that is truly appreciated. They endured every cliffhanger when we would stop reading for the day, as well as every turn of events that happened. This book ignited a fuel within them to make the world a better place. We are currently working to fund a well in Africa thanks to this. \r\nThe way this project has grown over the last few weeks has been truly enjoyable to watch because it all happened in a truly organic way. What started off as a traditional novel study, has grown into a cross-curricular project, where science class is tying in the water cycle, robotics class is adding their work to their websites, and this call to action fundraiser. \r\nTruly, thank you for this.
