A Remarkable Role Model for Our Remarkable Young Men

My students need 50 copies of "Yes We Can: A Biography of President Barack Obama" by Garen Thomas.

I have the great joy of teaching wonderful young men in one of Maryland's Title I middle schools. My 7th grade boys are moving toward closing the achievement gap for themselves, building confidence as they become better social scientists and readers.

Many of the young men I teach are struggling readers, and not because they lack ability. Rather, they have had few opportunities to access books that interest them, and therefore have not had enough practice to become proficient. My boys are eager to learn and need to learn about positive role models in an authentic way.

My young men would love to get their hands on a copy of "Yes We Can: A Biography of President Barack Obama." A copy for each of my boys will not only build their self-confidence, but will expose them to a readable, high-interest text that will spur further exploration in reading. Being an excellent reader will serve them in all areas of their lives, leading young men to be productive citizens in their communities.

I know my students well, and they will be remarkably grateful. Having given children books before, I can honestly say that some of them have never owned a book of their own. Your generous donation will make it possible for my boys to learn about a role model who speaks to their experiences, as well as giving them a starting point for community discussions.
