My Brooklyn school is a high poverty, non-English speaking place. The students come from all over the world. In my art room I endeavor to not only teach them tools and techniques, but how art from all cultures have bound us in the quest to create beauty. Everyone does it. Everyone loves it. It's a way of teaching cultural diversity and tolerance. Art making increases vocabulary and knowledge of geography (a subject no longer taught in lower grades). They see how we all had ancient civilizations, and how they have contributed to today's society. My school is 44% Asian, the rest a mix from Ukraine, Mexico and Russia. One out of three do not speak English so teaching is a challenge. Art is sometimes their only success of the week, since they can see me, watch me, and try to express themselves through paint or collage or clay.

Many of my students come from homes with no intellectual stimulation. Some live in shelters. Moms come in full burka. What I do is give them a total visual and auditory experience. If we are learning about Japanese screens and painting them with watercolors, I play Japanese music for them. My students do not come from homes where children are taken to the zoo on Saturdays, or even the playground. They are brought home and isolated. The moms are uncomfortable here because they don't speak English themselves. Families go home at the end of school and shut themselves in the house. It's their cocoon from the world.I give my students a taste of what is out there to enjoy.

Since I am able to get the videos and CD's for free, I could have continuous visuals to supplement the lessons I am giving them. I am limited as to how many museum trips we can make (one per year usually), but with the TV/VCR combo I can show them the world. I remember getting excited by seeing the pyramids of Egypt, the Amazon, and the Forbidden City when I saw National Geographic specials. I would like share my love of other cultures with my kids. When you are excited about something you want to learn about it and then read about it. My art room always has baskets of books relating to the topic we are learning.

My students are the next generation of people who will be your workforce. How they respond to foreigners, each other and new immigrants is really up to all of us. We can talk about tolerance but until there is a firm foundation of information and knowledge and understanding of other cultures can we truly begin to appreciate each others strengths and learn to tolerate what was previously perceived as a weakness.
