Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach students who are severely handicapped and blind in an urban, California elementary classroom.

Though my students are all non-verbal and in diapers and my classroom budget is $0, we cook, clean, create, and perform science fair projects with our typically developing buddies. My goal is to give my students as much independence as possible and to integrate us in the community.

I need to record my students performing all the chores, hobbies and creative endeavors we do during the school day. Parents don't often believe me when I tell them their child is washing dishes, or getting their own lunch, or opening and eating that lunch independently. Film footage is so powerful; it proves to families how much their children can do. They begin to expect more of their children at home, the ultimate way to improve independence and self-worth in my students.

Your help in providing this video camcorder will allow me to double my hard work with these students. If they generalize their skills to home, they will have carryover, which makes their learned skill part of real life. I already have a MacBook Pro and DVDs with which I can edit and burn this living "proof" of my students' progress. I would be most grateful.
