Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Art teaches higher leveled thinking to college-bound students! I teach 5 classes of ART 1, to a variety of students, ranging from beginning freshman with no art background to A.P. and I.B. students. All of my students are from a high-need urban community, most students qualifying for free lunch.

My students are studying Ancient Egypt in their other classes and wanted to do an art project based on what they have learned about Egyptian art & hieroglyphs. Teaching across the curriculum and integrating knowledge from other classes reinforces their learning. We want to make large-scale Cartouches of their name but have no supplies.

We are going to create large banner-style drawings of Egyptian cartouches combining their knowledge of hieroglyphs & Egyptian art with contemporary imagery and personal symbolism. I found enough large brown Kraft paper to use as the actual banners, but need oil pastels desperately. Also, the medium is very messy and the school does not have the budget to provide paper towels. I buy my own soap so they can wash their hands but can't afford the paper towels. If the students know they can clean up after working, they are more likely to be willing to get in there and get their hands dirty, so to speak.

This project will really make a difference to my students. I am always trying to teach them that art is fundamental to everything they will learn, from math to biology to english. Art integrates subject matter, it teaches higher level thinking skills, and provides problem-solving skills. When they are successful in art, they feel empowered and begin to do better in their other subjects.
