Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Introducing my 11th grade American Literature/Contemporary Composition students to challenging literary works of varying genres helps to prepare them for the rigors of college courses. One of the genres I would like to introduce them to is the neo-slave narrative, a fictional mutation of the autobiographies of 19th century Americans who lived as slaves, which we will read in conjunction with Frederick Douglass's classic autobiography.

My students are primarily African-American and Hispanic. I feel it is imperative to introduce them to quality multicultural works in addition to the classics of American literature. However, with our district's freeze on funding and drastic budget cuts, it has been a difficult time to obtain the needed materials.

In order to introduce my students to this genre, I am requesting 35 copies of Octavia E. Butler's "Kindred." This gift will enable us to read an accessible and high-interest novel that complements our classic texts.

You will make it possible for my students to read a highly original work, which will bring images of another time and place to mind, and, hopefully, help them to think and feel. We are deeply grateful for your support.
