Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My first grade classroom is part of a dual-language program. Half of my class come from Spanish speaking homes and half from English speaking homes. Our program teaches reading, writing and math in both Spanish and English. We are also a Title I school, which means my students come from low-income homes.

For homework, I encourage families to read together, but most of my students do not have books at home to read. There is no public library in the neighborhood and their parents do not have the resources to purchase books. I often tell my students the only way to become a better reader is to read.

The pre-made literacy backpacks and the book and CD set will allow me to provide resources for my students to borrow and use at home with their parents and increase their exposure to literature and improve their literacy skills.

Your help will ensure that my students have books they can read with their families and will encourage at-home reading as well as a strong home-school connection.
