Fluency For LIfe: A Biography Study to Polish Reading

I am an ESL teacher in Vermont. My colleagues and I have more than 70 students throughout the school, most of whom are former refugees. We are gearing up to become a charter school next year that focuses on the arts.

Although making great strides in learning English, one of the biggest ESL issues for us is fluency in reading. In addition, many of the teachers have biography units, but the biographies we have available are often written at a higher level than they can read.

I envision a biography unit that will span several grade levels. With digital recorders, we will help the students create electronic versions of books for other students to access in the library. Students will record the books page by page until they are perfect, then we will put the finished projects on CD or on the library computers so they can be accessed by anyone who wishes to listen to them. Feature books will be displayed in the library as we finish our work.

Reading is a really difficult task for kids to learn. It's even more difficult when you are learning another language. This project will help build reading fluency, self-esteem, and open students' eyes to new technology.
