Twilight Feels Right

"Twilight" has quickly become the hottest reading phenomenon among our 8th graders. It has inspired more kids to pick up books than we've ever seen before (even more than Harry Potter). Problem is, most of our students to not have access to Barnes & Noble, if they have even heard of it. We would like to give them the gift of this literary sensation. My students need 15 copies of "Twilight."

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We teach an 8th grade comprised of English Language Learners (ELLs), special needs students, in addition to general education students in an extremely high-need urban area of NY in which 85% of the students receive free lunch.

The libraries at our school are lacking; the last update of books look like they came from the late '80s. We know that if we could give our students a positive (and socially relevant) reading opportunity, we'd have a great shot at leveraging that momentum to get our kids reading a wide variety of literature.

Our plan is to circulate this set of 15 books to as many classrooms in the school as we can to conduct reading circles. The goal is to get this book into as many hands as possible and to broadcast its popularity across the school. This could lead to future school-wide reading circles, not to mention individual investment in reading. There is nothing better than engaging a child in reading through the right book.
