People Don't Go To Princeton To Become Teachers!

My students need a Compaq Presario computer and Viewsonic widescreen LCD monitor to research colleges, financial aid packages and scholarships. Also, they can use this computer to type and submit college essays which peers can help edit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In 1992 one high school teacher told me that students from schools like mine didn't go to schools like Princeton. I teach senior AP English at a low-income school with many students who will be first- generation college students.

These students face numerous obstacles; chief among these are growing up without a culture of education and lacking requisite supplies that would enable them to learn about and embrace opportunities to change their educational future.

I am part of the solution to the former problem. I continually share with students my experience as the only high school graduate in my family. Since I come from the same district as my students, they understand that I have lived through some of the same circumstances they have experienced. Then, when I share with them my experiences at Princeton (transitioning from fearful trepidation to understanding and empowerment), I continually encourage them to believe nothing is out of their grasp, so long as they are willing to dedicate themselves to their goal. With an extra computer in my room, those students who do not have a computer or Internet access in their home can use my room to write, proof read and submit essays; further, they can research colleges that are out of state, which many could not afford to visit. Finally, they can visit the financial aid indicator websites that will show many of my students that out-of-state and private institutions are NOT entirely cost-prohibitive, as many of them fear. Hopefully I can help expose them to possibilities they have not previously considered.

Please help me to "Pay it Forward". Generous donors at Princeton enabled me to earn an amazing, life-changing education, one that opened, and continues to open, many doors to me. While I cannot personally pay for my most gifted students to go to college, with your help I can link them with those organizations that can. You can help me to convince students that there are many opportunities for them beyond the life for which doubters may see them destined. Help me prove to my kids that students from schools like ours deserve to attend schools like Princeton (or any other institution which inspires them). As you reach your hand into our classroom and positively impact the lives of these students, they may be similarly inspired to do the same for future generations of students after they graduate from college.
