My English Language Learners come from 9 different countries and speak 2 to 3 languages each. What do they have in common? They love to write! These 3rd and 4th grade refugee and immigrant students love learning English, as well as the typical grade-level subjects. Some of the students had limited schooling in their previous countries, so they truly love and value learning in America.

My students love to write, but all worry about making mistakes. Those who speak limited English are concerned with spelling, grammar, and correct vocabulary. The newest, nonverbal students are worried about taking that chance in making an answer.

Dry erase boards provide an enormous incentive to write and can be used in countless ways. Above all, they provide a "safety net" for students to feel comfortable in trying an answer, phrase, or sentence and erasing it away if need be. Our class needs 10 magnetic dry erase boards, 10 mini-dry erase "Answer Boards", dry erase markers, and erasers.

Your help will provide these students with a comfortable means to take risks. All students will be given resources to respond, whether or not they are able to speak English yet. This will empower these English Language Learners to be active participants in all subjects in the classroom.
