Mrs. Hawes Valley View Middle School
Pleasant Hill, CA Grades 6-8

Sixth graders are creative and excited, and they love to try new things. Life is, in so many ways, an adventure to them, and my job is to try to keep a few steps ahead of them to keep them motivated to learn. I teach reading, writing, and history to sixty sixth graders, and try to incorporate technology to give them some real-life experience to support their academic experiences. We also interact with other schools globally through the Internet to exchange information about our communities and to learn more about other cultures. We've done projects with students across the country and even in South America.

While it's important for students to know how to read a textbook and understand the content, many students don't have the background knowledge to understand the concepts contained within the text. Technology can help to fill those gaps. I have access to a fabulous resource at my site which provides streaming videos, pictures, audio clips and more. However, the idea of 30+ students gathering around the computer monitor to watch a 20 minute video on the Egyptian pharaohs or pyramids just isn't practical. Discussing cultural art when I am holding up a photo or a page of a book doesn't allow students to see the details of the work, and passing around that photo or page takes a significant amount of class time. Teaching a grammar or spelling lesson frequently requires a lot of paper to be printed, meaning that a lot of paper is wasted )not to mention copying time). Introducing a computer lab assignment in the lab wastes computer lab time when all the students want to do is get started. They don't want to listen to me talk when their hands are just itching to explore websites or their own blog sites for themselves.

I need an LCD projector for my classroom. A projector dedicated to my classroom will allow me to teach more fluidly than when I must scramble to find and borrow one for a day here and there. At my previous site, I had a projector which I used almost daily for teaching. I have missed it tremendously. I have access to video streaming and other rich sites, and would love to have the ancient cultures come alive through video and pictures for my students. I love to show my students their own online work on the screen and critique and compliment what they've done. In fact, my students love to show their work and discuss its strengths and weaknesses with the class! I will use the computer lab far more efficiently when I can demonstrate the computer lab lesson in the classroom before the class goes in for the allotted time. Last year I made videos of student presentations, which can now be shown as models of high-standard work for this year's students. I demonstrate programs, facilitate class reviews and quizzes, play games with my students, and so much more. I use a laptop computer from a previous grant as well as a DVD player and a VCR that I purchased myself for classroom use.

Your donation will help learning come alive for my students in a way that they will never forget. My previous students frequently stop me with "remember when" stories about when learning came alive for them. It's great fun when my students read something in the text and discuss it with the background knowledge gleaned from a video or web site we visited as a class. As educators, our focus is to keep students motivated to learn. They find a million reasons not to do their homework, or to "forget" to read the book, or to interfere with the learning. However, when the class is engaged, learning happens, and students find reasons to come to school.
