Encouraging the development of civic skills and attitudes among young people is an important goal of social studies education. It is crucial for the future health of American democracy that all young people are knowledgeable, engaged in their communities and politics, and committed to the public good. Unfortunately, helping students “connect” with the social studies curriculum can prove challenging, especially when competing with the high tech media world into which our students are often immersed. Why not, instead, use this technology to facilitate learning and meaningful student experiences? With your help, I can!

My goal is to help students connect what they are learning in school with their communities and the world in which they live. Allowing students to incorporate video technology into their studies will inspire them TREMENDOUSLY! As a teacher of seventh and eighth grade Social Studies, my mind races with a multitude of ideas for using this technology to inspire my students to research, draft and clarify their thoughts and opinions, and express them via writing and video. I also create a website for student and parent usage. Think of how excited students and parents would be to see view their student presentations via the Internet! Use of video will help facilitate experiences that will help students apply what they learn about social studies and make their learning important and stimulating.

The Flip video cameras I've requested are small, easy to use, easy to download and student friendly. Their simplicity makes them ideal for class use.

By funding this proposal, you will help me incorporate technology into the social studies curriculum, and motivate my students to enhance their learning by integrating technology into their class projects.
