Creating an Arti-FISH-al Gill

My students need one dissolved oxygen probe.

Imagine sitting at the dinner table and asking your kids what they did today and they reply, "Dad, Mom, I made an artificial gill today!" That's the type of exciting opportunities I want to create in my Honors Biology Class. Our students come from a working class environment and they need the excitement of hands on technology to propel them into a career in the sciences.

Some students get discouraged by bad test scores. They need other activities to keep them excited about science. Science was once the most exciting part of a kid's day. Science can become exciting once again when students are challenged to build a functioning gill. Students will learn about diffusion and animals and then create a gill that actually functions. The problem is we have no way of testing if they were successful. They are left wondering if their gill actually worked.

A dissolved oxygen probe will allow students to test how much oxygen went from the water to their gill. Students will have a number to work with to see if diffusion actually did occur.

Your help will get my students excited about science once more. Imagine how empowering a kid will feel when they actually do something almost "impossible" like create a working gill! This confidence will stay with them the rest of their lives and hopefully encourage them to pursue a career in the sciences (something a test score can never do!)
