Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach second grade in a very high-need community where 98% of our students are second language learners and 100% receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite our socio-economic demographics, the mission at our school is to provide the students with the best learning tools for success and to ensure them that they, too, can make it to college and become successful citizens. The early years of education are the first bricks of that solid foundation upon which they can build future realizations. Hence we have adopted the concept of NO EXCUSES UNIVERSITY SCHOOL.

Every time I teach a new lesson to my second graders, I make sure they make a connection with the real-life use of that concept and they realize how important these skills will be outside of the classroom. I ask them “Why do you think second graders need to learn how to count, add and subtract money?” “Why do we need to learn how to tell time, and find the length and weight of objects?” “ Why do we need to learn the value and place of a number?” They give answers that would make any teacher very happy. However, I do clarify to them that it is not to pass a test or get good scores. It is to acquire tools for a successful future. However, how do we achieve this kind of teaching without the needed tools?

In order for my second graders to learn these skills in a meaningful way, we need several money kits so each student can have a personal kit with coins and paper money to learn how to count, add, subtract and give change. We have created a store where students will use play money to practice these skills by going shopping each Friday and paying for objects ( pencils, erasers, etc.) they will buy with the play money. We have created a check book master where they organize and find the total of the money they have and then subtract how much they have spent and how much they have left. This activity provides a learning fun experience and students gain place value and number sense skills. In addition, we also need several overhead kits to teach and demonstrate how to apply math concepts and learn new skills. These include: place value, time, fractions, shapes and dice. These materials are essential tools in the classroom for learning to become meaningful.

How do we teachers achieve this kind of learning without all necessary materials when we have zero dollars allowance for our classrooms? Having a creative imagination can only get us so far. Thus the reason I am asking you donors to help my students learn and master math skills by honoring my request of manipulatives to Make Math Real and Fun.
