Students with developmental disabilities, including mental retardation and autism, can learn to read when given the opportunity to do so. This premise is based on my own experience as a Special Education Teacher for students with moderate-to-severe disabilities. While my students range in ages between 15 and 22, they function at a kindergarten level. This population of learners is often overlooked when it comes to focusing curriculum on reading. By this time in my students' academic careers, it is time for them to start learning life skills such as how to ride a bus. However, they cannot ride the bus if they cannot read the bus schedule or find the bus stop. Given that my students are academically functioning at a kindergarten level, it is my belief that they can be taught early literacy skills at this level to include: alphabetic knowledge (symbols and sounds); phonemic awareness (syllables and words); and concepts of print (orientation of printed material). With your help to purchase the book “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” by Mo Willems, I can teach at an age appropriate level, introduce life skills into the reading (e.g., learning how to ride a bus), and add to my classroom’s book sets so that each student has a book to follow along in.
