First graders need a solid basis in phonics to learn to read! I want to give them that! Like many schools, we are facing budget cuts in the upcoming year as our state faces a budget shortfall. I am dedicated to not letting this effect the quality of education that my students get! Many of my students come from disadvantaged homes and could use a little extra help! Many speak languages other than English and live in poverty.

I want to find ways to give my students as much learning time as possible with phonics. Phonics can be taught in a variety of ways, but one thing is clear, the more exposure children get to letter sounds and sounding out words, the better they are able to read. Unfortunately for many students, they are not exposed to any of this at home, and come in to school behind their peers. I need to help them catch up.

By providing several phonics and alphabet letter sounds videos and The Big Book of Phonics Fun for my classroom, you will be helping students get more exposure to phonics. There are many ways a student can learn, the videos will provide sight and auditory learning, and the book will provide activities to reinforce what has been learned!

The National Reading Panel has identified phonics as one of the core areas of learning to read. By supporting my proposal, you can help a great group of first graders! Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal and for your support of donorschoose.org!
