Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach fifth grade in a large urban school district in California. My students come from diverse backgrounds. Some are learning to speak English. Some students are from families with limited incomes. Very few of my students have ever been to an art museum.

My students love art and enjoy drawing, but the resources that I have to teach art are very limited. They enjoy cartoons and Japanese comics, and I want to use that interest to introduce them to the history of art.

This project has three stages. First, the students will learn about artists by reading Mike Venezia's series of books about great artists, including Monet, Picasso, DaVinci, Frida Kahlo and Faith Ringgold, and looking at prints and posters of the artists' work. Next, we will learn about techniques of drawing, watercolor, and printing making using the instructional DVDs. Finally, my students will create their own art using the brushes, drawing paper and water colors.

Please give my students the opportunity to learn about art, culture, and self-expression. Introduce them to Picasso, Monet, Frida Kahlo and Van Gogh. Help them to appreciate art and to learn to express themselves through visual media. Thank you for caring about our students.
