"This is a mountain," I found myself explaining to my 7th graders as I drew on the board. Without the explanation, my snow-capped mountain could have been misinterpreted as a birthday hat or a chocolate-dipped ice cream cone. Because my students are English Language Learners, I frequently use images in our science classes to support communication. With an LCD projector, I could replace my drawings with the limitless supply of photographs available on the Internet.

More importantly than making up for my limited artistic abilities, an LCD projector would help my students communicate their ideas. As immigrants, they often have a description of a unique plant or beach sand or a hurricane from their home country to share with the class. With an LCD projector, a quick google images search will put photos accompanying their descriptions on the board, affirming the value of their contributions.

Beyond this daily use of the LCD projector, the students will use the projector to watch short science videos from the Internet, to give PowerPoint presentations, and to video conference with scientists. An LCD projector is the missing link between all the resources my laptop and the internet have to offer and my students.
