Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach reading and writing to 10th grade students in New York. All of the students I teach struggle with literacy in some way, and nearly all come to our school reading at least two grades below level.

Our classroom works as a workshop where students read and write on a daily basis. One of the aspects of literacy that I struggle with is helping students develop better listening skills, along with greater empathy and understanding for the stories of others.

One of the most successful projects I have ever done is "Project Interview". During this unit, we study different types of professional writing that were developed from interviews. Students then choose an adult over the age of 25 and interview that person. The interviews are recorded and students transcribe from a tape, and then use the material to write monologues and profiles of the people they interviewed. The transcription process was amazing! Students learned more vocabulary, listening skills, sentence structure, and writing skills than I even imagined when I first designed the unit. Their engagement level was intense, as they sat with their tapes and headphones and attempted to capture the essence of a conversation on paper. I can't wait to do this project again! However, last year I only had 8 tape recorders and had to juggle schedules in a way that made too many days unproductive for some students. I would love to have an entire class set of recorders/players.
