Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My future mathematicians range from prekindergarten to 5th grade. We are a Title 1 school with more than half of the students considered to be at-risk because of language barriers.

Currently, my students are having difficulty locating and replacing library books on the shelf because their place value skills are low. They are able to locate the books on our on-line system, but when they get to the shelves they become disenchanted because the call numbers look foreign and they don't quite understand the arrangement with the decimal points.

The resources I am requesting will allow students to practice place value each time they visit the library. They will arrange place value cards and book spines in order using decimal points and alphabets. They will also create their own decimals and match them to books in the library. The constant practice will hone their place value and ABC ordering skills. Once they become more familiar with the Dewey Decimal System place value system, they will be able to find books on the computers and the shelves which will advance their math and reading levels tremendously this year and in the years to come.

Your help will ensure that my current mathematicians become future mathematicians. You will make a dream become a reality for several hundred eager readers who long for being proficient in finding, checking out and reading books. The easier it is for them to locate their books independently and read the call number, the more books they will to check out.
