Lights, Camera, Active Learning

My students need 1 Flip Video Camera.

N. Charleston, SC Grades 3-5

I teach technology integration in a Title I elementary school. Students in grades K through fifth come to the computer lab once a week for a lesson that integrates curriculum standards with technology. In my class students complete projects, research and practice for skills and content they are learning in the classroom while gaining important computer and life skills. I use grade level instructional calendars and state curriculum standards to plan lessons and projects that support curriculum as well as technology standards.

My biggest challenge is to design projects that get students engaged with curriculum content. It is my job to give students the opportunity to be active learners not just passive receptors of information. I want my students to participate in projects that require them to think critically, work collaboratively, and problem solve while they interact with standards based content.

One of the most successful ways of getting students to take an active role in their learning is through student created video projects. Student produced videos require students to use a number of important life skills like project management, communication, research, and writing. Students are actively engaged with the content from pre-production to post-production. Some videos that my students have produced include newscasts about earthquakes and volcanoes, weather forecasts, and video time lines of the revolutionary war. However, with the video equipment currently available to students they need a lot of teacher support to capture and edit the videos. The flip video camera and its included software is kid friendly and simple to use giving student more independence and ownership of their projects.

With your donation of the Flip Video Camera my students will be inspired and empowered to make content based videos. They will be able to complete the process of filming and editing independently due to the simplicity of the Flip taking even more ownership of their projects. We are living in a digital age and student produced video is a surefire way to provide our digital natives with a learning experience they can relate to.
