Cuddle Up With a Book

My students need a reading library carpet and 3 bean bag seats for reading.

Philadelphia, PA Grades 3-5

Inspiring students to read is the goal of my classroom this year. I teach a fifth grade classroom, in all subject areas. The school is in an inner city and has an extremely high poverty level.

My students are highly motivated students who have not had every opportunity to succeed in reading due to a lack of comfortable space, and only being provided with low-interest stories. Students are forced to read books that have no connection to their personal lives and because of this they don't find the inspiration that reading can bring. I have begun to create a library for my students filled with books that students have shown an interest in. The atmosphere is still very cold though. There are no places for students to sit and read and although we have enough space to provide a comfortable sitting area for students we do not have the materials to do so. Throughout the year I ask students to do so many things that require books, and the time and space to read them. Activities range from simple book reports, character sketches, research essays and historical timelines to the more creative aspects of reading like creating a skit or play to present their stories, writing a critical book review and recommending their story to another child and even peer to peer tutoring. There is no comfortable area in the classroom for students to perform these tasks.

I envision a setting where students can "cuddle up with a book" and savor every page they read while being as comfortable as possible. Students need a carpet so they do not have to be so close to the cold floor. Providing a carpet gives the library a more homey feeling and allows students to relax and take it easy while enjoying their books. In addition to providing carpet space, adding a few bean bag chairs will give the library a magnetic force drawing students in because they will want to sit in the cushioned seats. Having a reading area that draws students in will give them a reason to want to read, and that's our goal, creating life-long readers.

Having a website like Donors Choose gives teachers an opportunity to provide materials for their students that otherwise would not be available. Your help is so crucial to the success of my reading initiative this year and will benefit students for many more years. Reading is such an important aspect of education. Without knowing how to read, all other subjects suffer. Your help in creating a comfortable classroom library will enable me to introduce students to a world of reading, from adventures in Egypt to biographies of presidents. These materials will enhance the learning of students this year and for years to come. Help me give the gift of passion for reading to my students.
