Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Do you remember when you were in 6th grade? I am a 6th grade English and Social Studies teacher. I teach fifty-four students in a magnet program with many students who travel a great distance to attend middle school. Seventy percent of my students are minorities. All of my students love hands-on projects!

We want to recreate the wheel making it one-third it's original size. I'm looking for a way to approach history with hands-on activities that allow the student to not only remember specific rulers in Ancient Egypt, but also be able to create objects that will allow them to remember what they have accomplished. Shrinky Dinks is the medium that I will use to excite my students about the famous Ancient Egyptian rulers.

Shrinky Dinks is a type of plastic that students can draw on and cut to make various shapes and objects. Once the Shrink Dinks are baked in the oven the Shrinky Dinks shrink to one-third of there original size, creating objects that will look similar to decorated charms on a necklace. Shrinky Dinks will allow the students to create Egyptian Cartouches and charms that will go on a necklace to remind the students about a specific Egyptian ruler and his or her major accomplishments. The reason this project will be successful is because it is a hands on activity, combining art with research. There is a creative process involved that will allow the students to think about what the ruler did, but also what artifacts or symbols can be represented on a very small scale.

It only takes one magical day to make school the place my students want to be. You can be part of that day. Thank you for your help.
