Living United States History

My students need to engage in the visual and audio parts of history. Therefore we need a LCD Projector in order to see history as it happened, from the Civil Rights marches of the 1960's to the planes flying into Pearl Harbor. It is integral to watching news clips and current events, including Barack Obama's inauguration speech that is coming up on January 20th, 2009.

Mr. I. Bartram High School
Philadelphia, PA Grades 9-12

I teach at a large urban public high school in an impoverished neighborhood. My students come from tough situations at home. The vast majority have significant obstacles from attending a better school somewhere else in the city. Over 95% of my students are African American and 81% of them qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program through Title I. This background fundamentally shapes how they view history. My subject is 11th Grade US History where I push my students to not only learn the history of their country but be able to apply their knowledge to do something positive. I push each of them to be social critics by forming their own opinions and using historical knowledge to support their assertions.

After Barack Obama was elected President of the United States a few days ago, one of my brightest students came up to me and said he thought he would be good at politics. After I sincerely agreed that he would be he responded, "Maybe one day I'll run for President." I can't tell people how Obama's election has fundamentally changed the outlook of my students for their futures. It is not the answer to all the problems at my school by any means, but they see someone who represents them in the most powerful position in the world. For my students that fact is earth shattering. It was certainly the most significant historical event to happen in their lives and I want them to be able to witness this event like any other student in America.

I had borrowed a colleagues LCD projector to show the Obama victory speech and McCain concession speech. I have never seen the students so focused and engaged in a lesson. History should not be just read about in a book, but must be experienced in a number of different ways. I want my students to see and study Obama's Inaugural Address in January and be able to engage it. I want my students to use it to be social critics and form their opinions about the world using certifiable knowledge to back up what they say. If I had a LCD projector of my own I could fundamentally engage my students on a much deeper and meaningful level on a number of different occasions in history we have yet to study. I want to be able to show them websites and historical images. I want to be able to review classwork and assessments right from my laptop so they can see as well. Using this technology I can streamline my lessons and build investment in my students like never before.

I am gracious for any help my students and I can receive. I believe we are living in one of the most historic times in a generation and my students deserve to effectively engage in this moment on the same level as students that attend wealthy schools. Living through history doesn't mean much unless you can witness historical events.
