Ms. W. Central Elementary School
Hillsborough, NC Grades PreK-2

I am the Librarian in a high needs elementary school that serves approximately 278 Pre-K through 5th grade students.

We are the smallest school in our district and the funds for our library are based on how many students we have enrolled. This year our already very small budget was cut in half!!

Every year our students participate in the North Carolina Children's Book Award Program. For 2008-2009, there are fifteen books nominated in the Picture Book Category and fifteen books in the Junior Book Category. Our library currently has six out of the thirty titles nominated. In order to participate in this wonderful program we need to acquire the remaining twenty something books! Students who participate in the Book Awards program read the nominated titles or have the books read to them. They then decide which of the books is their favorite and deserves to win the Book Award. The program is intended to broaden students' awareness of current literature, and promote reading as a means of personal satisfaction and as a lifelong pursuit. It also encourages students to recognize and honor their favorite books and authors.

Children throughout our state participate in this program and vote for their favorite book from the titles on the nominated lists. Your help would make it possible for our students to once again participate in this Book Award Program.
